Outside the Central Path: the View from Madrid

What happens if you’re outside the central path of the eclipse, for example in central Madrid? What will you see?

You’ll need to keep your eclipse glasses on, for eyesight protection, so there’ll be no corona or chromosphere to see. But, you WILL see a prolonged and rather spectacular string of Baily’s Beads sliding their way around the southern pole of the Moon.

These can be fascinating to watch, and even more fun to photograph. They vary depending on your exact location on the path. Use the TPE Eclipse Simulator if you want to know exactly what to expect at your observation site.

But of course, you can still see Baily’s beads from within the Central Path too: for almost every observer, that’s going to be the better choice.
