TPE Web offers a range of map types suited to different locations and photography planning tasks. For landscape photography, you may prefer a topographic map, while street or satellite maps can be useful for city and urban locations.
This article provides an overview of the currently available map types. Map types are different from map styles, which change the visual appearance of the selected map without changing the underlying map itself.
Please note: available map types are subject to change.
Free Map Types
Neighbourhood – street map, recommended for city and urban locations

Supporter Map Types
The following additional map types are available with a Supporter subscription.
MapBox Satellite – a satellite map without labels. It’s often worth comparing it with Google satellite maps to see differences in the age of the imagery (e.g. new construction) and angle of the shot (a steeper angle, i.e., imagery shot directly from above, is better for planning purposes, and different satellites follow different orbits).
USGS Topo – United States Geological Survey topographic map and combined satellite and topographic map, with excellent coverage of North America. It is particularly suitable for landscape locations (note: contours and marked elevations are shown in feet, except for Hawaii, which uses metres 🤷🏻♂️)
PRO Map Types
The following additional map types are available with a PRO subscription.
USGS Imagery Topo – United States Geological Survey combined satellite and topo map. Like the USGS topographic map, it has excellent coverage of North America; particularly suitable for landscape locations (note: contours and marked elevations are shown in feet, except for Hawaii, which uses metres 🤷🏻♂️)
Thunderforest Outdoors – for all outdoor enthusiasts: hiking, skiing and other activities
Thunderforest Landscape – a global map focused on information about the natural world – great for rural areas
Thunderforest Transport – a map that shows public transport in great detail
OpenTopoMap – a detailed topographic map style, ideal for landscape photography in remote locations
OrthoIGN (fr) – Aerial orthophotography of France provided by IGN, offering a detailed photographic view of the landscape.
PlanIGN (fr) – A detailed general-purpose map of France provided by IGN, France’s national mapping agency.
Google Maps – standard, terrain and satellite
