TPE Web offers several ways to customize the map for different locations and photography planning tasks. You can choose the underlying map type, add map layers that display additional information, and change the map style to adjust the map’s visual appearance.
Available map types, layers, and other features vary by subscription level. Some are available to all users, while others require a Supporter, PRO, or MAX subscription. In this article, we’ll look at how to open the Map panel and use its Map type, Map layers, and Map style controls.
Understanding the Map Panel
Open the Map panel by clicking the Map button in the toolbar at the top of the right sidebar.
The panel brings together the controls for choosing the underlying map, adding map layers, and changing the map’s appearance.
- Map button – opens the Map panel.
- Map type – choose between Google Maps and TPE Web’s Default Maps.
- Map type options – expand either group to choose a specific map.
- Map layers – add additional geographic or planning information to the map.
- Map style – change the visual appearance of the selected map.
- Close panel – closes the right sidebar.
Changing Map Type
The Map type controls determine the underlying map displayed in TPE Web. You can choose between Default Maps and Google Maps.
Click either heading to expand the available options, then select the map type you want to use.
Default Map Types
TPE Web includes a range of Default Maps suited to different planning needs. Some are available to all users, while others require a Supporter, PRO, or MAX subscription. Subscription requirements are shown beside each option.
- Map types available without a subscription
- Map types that require a paid subscription
Google Map Types
Google Maps are available with a PRO or MAX subscription. Available map types include:
- Road map
- Satellite
- Hybrid
- Terrain
The map type you choose can also affect which map layers are available. Some layers can only be used with Default Maps.
Note: Available map styles are subject to change.
Changing Map Layers
Map layers add additional information over the selected map. Depending on the layer, this may include terrain information, lighting conditions, shadows, or other planning data.
The layers available depend on both your subscription level and the map type you are using. Some layers are available only with Default Maps and cannot be used with Google Maps. Subscription requirements are shown beside each layer in the Map panel.
To use a layer, expand Map layers and select the layer you want to display.
Example: Hillshade
Hillshade emphasizes the shape of the terrain by simulating light and shadow across the landscape. It can make ridges, valleys, and other terrain features easier to see.
Example: Light Pollution
The Light Pollution layer shows relative levels of artificial night-sky brightness, helping you compare darker and brighter areas when planning night photography.
Other available layers provide additional information about terrain, sunlight, shadows, and visibility. Some of these features are covered in more detail in their own Help Center articles.
Changing the Map Style
Map styles change the visual appearance of the selected map without changing the underlying map type or adding new information.
To change the map style:
- Expand Map style in the Map panel.
- Select the style you want to use.
Available styles include options such as Normal, Grayscale, Desaturated, Contrast boost, Invert grayscale, Invert desaturated, and Lightened.
Example: Grayscale
The Grayscale style removes color from the underlying map. This can make TPE Web’s planning information – such as Sun and Moon lines, shadows, or sightlines – easier to distinguish from the map itself.
