Setting Up Your Photo Gear

You can set up your photo gear in TPE so that it is saved with your account profile.

It’s quick and easy to add camera bodies and lenses. Our camera and lens knowledge base (KB) usually already has what you need, but if not, no worries: you can ask the app to search the web for the model you need.

Records created from the knowledge base include all the details you need to use the gear in field-of-view calculations and visualizations.

Coming soon: in the next major version of our iOS app, you’ll be able to view and manage your photo gear and use it with a variety of useful tools, including field of view, depth of field, hyperfocal length, point stars and star trail exposure planning.

Adding a Camera

It’s simple – just click Add Camera and type the name and model you need. Generally, you’ll see a match already in the knowledge base results. From there, click Add and confirm all the details. The default values are drawn from the KB records, but you can edit as needed. Generally, you should be able to accept the suggested values and move on.

Note that if you have any adapters to convert from one mount type to another, TPE doesn’t need to know. When you add a lens, there are no hard restrictions on how cameras and lenses can be combined.

Finding a Camera Model

If the KB does not already have details about your camera, you can click Search the Web, and TPE will search for information about the camera in question:

No results for Nikon F4

The search process may take a while, so please be patient:

Searching for the Nikon F4

In the vast majority of cases, a search for a genuine camera model will be successful. Here, once found, you can click to add the Nikon F4:

Search result for the Nikon F4

Once you see a result, click Add. You’ll be presented with a form where you can confirm or amend the details provided from the KB record.

Adding a Lens

The process is identical to adding a camera, with the same fallback web search mechanism available for any lenses not already in the knowledge base.

Limitations

  • The number of cameras and lenses you can add depends on your subscription level. Check the features on the subscribe page for details.
  • The photo gear page is primarily designed to accommodate interchangeable-lens cameras. You can add a multi-camera phone or drone with one or more sensors and lenses integrated into the device, but you’ll need to add it in multiple parts; for example, add “ Apple iPhone 16 Pro ” as the camera and “ Apple iPhone 16 Pro Wide Angle ” as the lens.
