A long-duration eclipse over southern Spain, North Africa and Arabia
The 2 August 2027 Total Solar Eclipse promises to be one of the major photographic eclipses of the century.
The headline attraction is its duration: maximum totality reaches 6 minutes 23 seconds, with the point of greatest eclipse in Egypt, around 60 km south-east of Luxor (view in TPE (The Photographer’s Ephemeris)). The path there is around 258 km wide, and the Sun stands at a neck-stretching 81.7° altitude. For photographers, that last number matters enormously. Egypt offers exceptionally long totality and extremely favourable prospects for clear skies, but a Sun almost overhead makes the classic wide-angle eclipse-over-landscape composition difficult-to-impossible.

Where to Photograph the 2027 Eclipse
There is plenty of choice elsewhere. The path of totality crosses southern Spain, including parts of Cádiz and Málaga provinces, then Gibraltar, before continuing through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. The western end of the path sacrifices some duration compared with Egypt, but the lower solar altitude can offer much stronger opportunities to place the eclipsed Sun into a landscape.
There are also some very specific opportunities near the path limits. TPE’s lunar-limb analysis for a location near the southern limit of the path in northern Morocco, at 34.7237°N, 4.4957°W, predicts a spectacular pair of Baily’s Beads around the contact, producing an unusual double diamond-ring effect. You can explore the geometry in this TPE shot plan. It is a good reminder that eclipse planning needn’t simply mean finding the centreline. Detailed lunar limb geometry can make carefully chosen locations elsewhere in the path particularly rewarding – and the duration of totality in this spot is still almost 2 minutes 22 seconds, still longer than TSE2026 over Spain.
Outside the path, there are some quite different photographic possibilities. Newfoundland and Labrador see a partial eclipse around sunrise (for example, here), potentially allowing a partially eclipsed Sun to be combined with a terrestrial foreground. At the opposite end of the event, parts of South and Southeast Asia see the partial eclipse close to sunset, for example, in Penang, Malaysia.
Weather, Heat, and Exposure
Weather is likely to be a major part of the planning equation. Egypt’s desert climate offers excellent prospects for clear skies, but August around Luxor is brutally hot, with typical daytime maximum temperatures around 41°C / 106°F. Photographers need to plan for that as seriously as they plan their exposures. Shade, water and heat protection for people are essential, while cameras, computers, batteries and tracking equipment may spend hours sitting in direct sunlight before totality. Overheating electronics, thermal shutdowns and simply handling very hot equipment are all practical considerations.
So it’s not simply a question of heading for the longest duration. The 2027 eclipse offers a genuine choice between duration, weather prospects, solar altitude, foreground possibilities and the detailed geometry of the lunar limb. For photographers, the best location may well be somewhere quite different from the point of greatest eclipse – plan out your options with TPE.
